Curse you comparison

The other day, while watching one of my favorite guilty pleasures, a few things occurred to me-

> Comparing ourselves is an age old problem. Hence the phrase- "Keeping up with the Joneses".
> Why can't we be happy with what we have?
> I guess that question is synonymous with why we can't look like the models in magazines.
> Life's not perfect, and neither are we. Though we hold ourselves to that standard far too often.
> The feeling of inadequacy almost always feeds the hunger of consuming.
>The stuff we buy never fills the void of that feeling of inadequacy, and we end up right back were we started.
>It's such a vicious cycle.
Curse you comparison!

Could it be that we are trying to fill our feelings of inadequacy with online "carts" waiting to be bought, or keeping ourselves "busy" to block out the feelings of not being good enough, or not being the best at something?

What makes someone better than us? Comparing ourselves to someone else must be one of the dumbest things a person can do. We aren't the same as someone else. We aren't clones. So, saying one person is better, or cooler, or skinnier, or prettier, or smarter, or funnier - whatever "it" is that they are "better" at - doesn't really stick until we tell ourselves it's true.

We start with the - They're prettier than me. They're smarter than me. They're so good at this, why do I even bother? We're tearing ourselves down, and not leaving much hope by the end of it.

We need to stop telling ourselves someone else is better than us, and start telling ourselves we are on the right path to being the best us.

We can hear all the good things people say about us, but only remember the bad criticism. Let's stop caring about the negative things and start caring about the good. After all, the only person's opinion we should care about is our own, or something like that.

  1. Amen lady! I'm a definite compare-er and I need to stop! Man it's hard sometimes though. I find myself comparing myself to other mama's that seem to have it all together while I live in beautiful chaos.
