Homemade Almond Milk

When DC was born,  acquaintances would say how important cows' milk was for him, but in my gut I knew better.  I wanted to create a healthier alternative to help wean my son. Homemade almond milk seemed to be the best choice.

He loves it, and I couldn't be prouder watching him drink milk made from a superfood. Now, Papa is the only one in the house who drinks "real" milk, and to him I say, bottoms up!

What you'll need ..
> cheese cloth
> quality blender
> strainer
> glass container to store milk
> 1 cup organic raw almonds (skin on)
> 2 cups water

What you'll do ..
1. Soak one cup of almonds for 1 to 2 days (cover completely with water). The longer they soak the creamier the milk. Sometimes, I even let mine sit for 3 days.
2. Rinse off almonds in your strainer.
3. Combine (soaked + rinsed) almonds and two cups of filtered water in the blender.
4. Blend on "liquify".
5. Put cheese cloth into measuring cup.
6. Pour the blended mixture into the cheese cloth.
7. Squeeze out the milk. You will be left with almond pulp in the cheese cloth which is perfect for "breaded" zucchini, so save it if you want to add it to something later!
8. Pour milk into glass bottle, & store in fridge until you are ready to enjoy a nice cold sip! Be sure and shake before serving, remember separation is perfectly normal, and shows how fresh it really is!

You can order the organic raw almonds we use here and boxed water here. Linked below is the very same blender we use, only ours is lime green, and we love the power this little guy packs with a sweet price tag. Good luck!

  1. I've been wanting to try making my own for the longest time, and after seeing your post, I think I might give it a try this weekend!! Probably a dumb question, but I've seen cheesecloth in the painting section at Home Depot, will this work?? And can you reuse it? I feel like I've seen where you aren't supposed to, but can't remember. And I'm assuming it will keep for 3-5 days in a glass jar in the fridge?

    1. Danielle,

I got my cheese cloth for under five bucks at a kitchen shop, but I am certain you can get the one from Home Depot! I hand wash mine, and hang dry it. It hasn't been an issue.. yet? Ha!

Have you tried it yet? We use our batches up in two days because I don't trust it for longer than that.

      xo & hope this helps!

  2. I'm excited to love this recipe. My almonds are soaking as we speak! Yesterday my husband and I were in the grocery store and he said, "hey, do you need to get almond milk?" And I said, "nope! I get to make my own!" I already have a sense of accomplishment, so thank you for sharing! I'm excited to finish my first batch.
