Tis the Season

photos taken by the ever so talented lumi photography (click here for direct link) she is amazing

It is the season of gratitude and giving. Where we send loved ones cards and gifts. I love receiving Christmas cards. The smiling family members who are so far away sit on my mantle, and there is a beautiful note of love usually inscribed on the back.

When I was a little girl, I would work all year, doing chores, and odd jobs, saving all the money I earned for this time of year. I would have my mother drop me off at the mall, or go with my dad, and shop for the very best gifts I could afford. I remember saving all my money one year in particular to buy my mother something extra special. I went into the jeweler by myself, and came out feeling so excited. Over the moon really. Her gift was going to be awesome, and I counted the days 'til Christmas not because I wanted gifts, but because I couldn't wait to give her her's.

I would check everyday and make sure it was still wrapped just so, and untouched in it's hiding place. I didn't waste a minute looking for what gifts "Santa" had for me. Even though I knew "his" usual hiding places.

When the day finally came, and she rolled downstairs for the covenanted gift unwrapping, I shot up to my room, racing back with her gift in tote. "Mom, you first. Open my gift," I cheered. She ever so gently unwrapped the paper for what seemed to take a lifetime. Not tearing a single piece of it, slowly puling off the tape. When she finally got to the box and read "Kay's," her eyes began to water. At 12 years old, my heart raced faster than it had been while I waited with even more anticipation. She opened the box to find a diamond heart necklace on a gold chain. I looked at her and we shared a moment and some words I will never forget. Just over 100 dollars, I had worked so hard to give her a gift I knew she had done far more work for and deserved.

It was that Christmas I learned that it wasn't about getting, or really even giving things. It was about showing people how very much you loved them, and perhaps even how much more you would sacrifice for them.

Tis the season.
