How to make boba pearls with taro

As most of you know, once the warm weather sets in, I am all about the boba (bubble) "tea." I am using the term tea here lightly because it doesn't have to be a tea, it can be a smoothie too, which is my personal preference. I was kinda astonished that one small boba can cost about 5 bucks! A drink in my opinion should never cost more than two dollars, so I decided to venture out and attempt to make some boba tea myself.

It was a rockstar moment in our house, when I took my first sip. I did a little happy dance, and couldn't wipe the huge grin off my face! So let's break it down, shall we?

// What you'll need //

boba pearls- you can buy these online or at your local asian market. i buy the "ready in 5 minute" kind, because there are some pearls that need to soak overnight, and i can't ever plan when i'll get a boba craving, so that was a no go for me. heads up, the ready in 5 do taste just as delicious as the soak overnight kind. no worries there.

// how to cook them //

1. bring water to a boil (enough water to fully cover the boba), in a pot that will allow the pearls space to move around. if you pack the pearls into too small a pot they will stick together, & won't cook throughly. the water needs to be boiling & bubbling to cook the boba perfectly, so be patient.

2. insert the the boba pearls. set a timer for 5 minutes (stir occasionally) & let them bounce around for a bit.

3. rinse with cold water, & pop into the smoothie or tea of your choice. ( for softer boba, which i love, remove the pot from heat when timer is done, cover & let them sit for another 5 minutes. then, rinse & pour into desired drink!)

// taro boba //

after boba is cooked, i blend 1 cup of coconut milk with 3 heaping tablespoons of taro powder, & 1/2 a cup of ice.

Cheers!
